Born on August 27, 1941, in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde, Évora began performing in local establishments, weaving the traditional sounds of *morna*—a soulful Cape Verdean genre characterized by lament and longing— with her intimate voice. Her 1988 international debut album, "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus," catapulted her onto the global stage, introducing scores of new listeners to the tender and haunting melodies of her homeland.
